What is tifi?
Tifi (pronounced teefee)
Someone asked on another blog what Tifi is so here’s the story. I’m a first generation American (mom is St. Lucian, dad is Martiniquais). Even though I was born in NYC (Brooklyn!), I lived in St. Lucia till I was 6 and then continued to spend summers there until I was 13 or 14. A sort of french patois is spoken in St. Lucia. It’s called Kwéyòl or Patwa. Tifi is a kwéyòl word which means chick, girl, or even young woman depending on how it’s being used. I don’t know a lot of Kweyol unfortunately b/c in my family, it’s the language the adults spoke when they didn’t want the kids to know what they were saying, heh. I teach my kids the little bit I do know and hope to impressive some relatives and friends w/ that on our next visit, lol.
